3 Tips to avoid data loss due to system crashes in SMBs

Updated: Nov 20, 2019

There are a lot of things that a business owner needs to be varied off. Employee management, data management, finance, and compliance issue and many others. These may seem small things but can be built up into becoming something much large if not taken care of properly.

Cloud backup and disaster recovery strategy is essential for smooth business continuity.

Data is also another small detail in a business that needs to addressed properly. If it is not, businesses may face a small to a large amount of data loss which is not ideal for any business owner. This is where a backup plan arises.

Here are some of the tips to prevent data loss in a business

1. Keep Critical Files in Cloud Storage

This is the basic rule of data storage. Always keep all your critical files in the cloud. This way you will be able to achieve a sort of a real-time backup for your critical files. There are many vendors out there (for e.g. StoneFly) who provide such services, choose the one which suits your data the best.

2. Count for Computers Crashes: Turn to Cloud Backup

As a business owner, you must have encountered a computer crash at least once in your professional life. If not a crash, then you must have encountered a hardware failure or your laptop being stolen.

It is astonishing to see that the hardware failure rate has increased so much in the last 4 years, which is why more and more people are moving to cloud storage as an alternative, which makes sense as it is way more secure than regular storage.

Apart from this, take laptop loss also into account, your laptop man also be stolen or hacked. These events happen on a daily basis and without a proper cloud backup, it is impossible to recover your data in the event of a system failure or loss.

3. Have an Offsite backup: 3-2-1 Rule

Even small businesses need to follow the 3-2-1 backup rule which states that there should be 3 copies of data, stored in 2 different storage media and 1 of them should be off-site. What would you do if your systems and laptops got corrupted or were stolen? Having an offsite backup enables you to restore your data easily and suffer no data loss whatsoever.

To Conclude

A system crash can happen at any time and for small businesses and startups, it can be a very big headache. Opting for a backup plan and following the 3-2-1 rule will ensure that your data always remains secure and that you suffer no data loss.
